The rhythm of life…

Your breath is your constant companion, you can take it anywhere with you and you can control it even when everything else has to land in the hands of others around you…In short, your breath is your best friend and one of the most important *secrets* for labour and birth…

Breath awareness in pregnancy

Let the rhythm of your breath soothe you and your baby

There are, as you likely know, many breathing techniques that can support you and serve different purposes throughout pregnancy, labour and birth (and beyond)…I’ll be posting more about those soon…

The first and most important thing to know about your breath is that you need to watch it…feel it…experience it…So, try this simple breath awareness…

You can sit or lie down, just make sure that you are comfortable and you can keep your spine long, your chin off your chest…if sitting, make sure you have the soles of both feet firmly grounded and if lying down, consider lying on your left side for optimal positioning for your baby…

Close your eyes and scan your body a few times to check that you feel fully supported and comfortable…keep your eyes softly closed, your lips softly sealed, inhaling and exhaling through your nose…

Bring your attention to your breathing, no conscious effort to control or change it, simply notice the natural flow of your breath as it is right now…focus on the physical sensations of your breath…rise and fall of your belly and chest, movement of air over the top lip, in your nostrils, in the back of your throat…what do you feel? Where do you feel it?  Continue like this for a minute or two…

Next, bring your attention to the less physical aspects of your breath…notice its rhythm, depth, its quality…could you describe it by colour or shape or texture?  Keep full awareness of your natural breathing right now…

If you can spend a few minutes with your breath this way, you will begin to notice subtle shifts…even if we begin with shallow, irregular breathing, after a few moments of being conscious of our breath, we usually find that without any great effort, it begins to slow down, to feel a little deeper and to settle into a more wavelike rhythmic flow…

If you spend a little time this way each day, it is likely that you will start to find that your breath is naturally a little deeper, just a little more wavelike in its rhythm, each time you begin, as you become more connected with your body and your breath through simple, gentle awareness…

Take a moment today and let yourself be soothed, nourished and nurtured by the rhythm of your breath…
